Do you want to have to pay everytime you want to reach your target audience? If your answer is a big whopping “NO” then this post is for you!
Email marketing is one of the best ways to get your content in front of the right people. It’s the most trustworthy, most “guaranteed” way to market to your audience.
Before we dive into the 10 ways you can grow your email list, let me tell you why you need to focus on your email list and why it’s much better than your social media accounts.
Why build your email list?
Email marketing is the king of marketing! Literally speaking. You will have people who will judge you and look at you with skepticism, but you will also have people who will call you their “messiah”!
Think of all the websites that you buy from, Amazon, eBay, Spotify, Audible (my personal favorite), and any website that really sells on a professional level. What do they all have in common with each other?
They all use email to market to you as a customer! Some even go to the extent of running into a loss just to get your email address! Why do you think that is?
Because email will always give them a positive ROI!
and not just any… Email has an ROI of $44 for every $1 you spend!
So if you spent $100 on acquiring leads, those leads would easily give you back $4400 in return sooner or later!
Of course, it’s not overnight, and if you are looking for an overnight success, this post is definitely NOT for you!
Email marketing, in my opinion, is the #1 thing you as a blogger, or a business owner needs to focus on no matter what you do.
But first… Let me tell you why I believe in email marketing this much!
To me personally, the only other alternatives are:
- Facebook Messenger Bots
- Google Adwords
Now you might ask: aren’t those what everyone is using and making money through?
They are ok-ish… but they are not the best. Here’s why:
Last year I experimented with growing a Facebook page from 0 to a huge number of following. The concept was: if you have a lot of followers, then you are more likely to get more views on your blog or youtube videos. A simple post on a page with a huge following should get a lot of views, interactions, and even clicks! Right?
I grew the Facebook page to 65,000 followers. I never bought fake likes, nor did I indulge in anything “black hat”, and you should never do because that’s just wrong!
All I did was, design ads, split test them, and run them. I stopped what wasn’t giving me a good cost per like, and scaled up on what was giving me a good cost per like.
It was supposed to be an experiment to find something out for myself (you should too if you are serious about online marketing).
Normally from a page this size, you would expect at least 1000 clicks on the links you share and a little more engagement than normal small pages! Talking about daydreaming… mine was getting NOTHING!!!!!
Despite everything people consider a must on Facebook pages like:
- Scheduling Posts
- Having a fixed schedule
and a bunch of other nonsense. Still, I was getting nada!
WHY? Because apparently, I couldn’t reach my whole audience due to Facebook’s algorithm. With a following of 65,000 people, I was reaching around 300 people at best, and most times below 200 people.
This also applies to other pages as well, not just mine! Take a look at Facebook for pages with a huge following, and try to compare their following with their engagement rates.
Same applies to Twitter and Instagram, and Messenger Bots were very new at the time to experiment with them.
The reason for the reach being so low is Facebook has to prioritize who sees what on their newsfeed.
This was one of the factors that helped Trump become president in the first place… Just saying…
Anyway, so their algorithms tend to rank your post based on something close to 1000 factors (if not more) which means they are impossible to figure out!
I know because I built my own AI a few years ago to trade the stock market and even I didn’t know how my code was “thinking”.
Another thing is, Facebook wants you as a business owner to pay for Ads! So regardless of what you do, you’ll eventually have to pay to reach your existing audience.
Now don’t get me wrong, social media channels are very important for your business! But not the most important.
If the above doesn’t convince you, then I surely hope you comment below and tell me why and hopefully I get to learn something from you too!
How email lists beat social media channels
Let’s now compare the same promotion with the exact same number of people. I took one of my email lists and separated a segment of 65,000 people from it.
So now we have an email list of 65,000 people. I sent them an email and a link to a blog post.
Now let me share with you the statistics, to show you how the two compare!
My open rate within the first 48 hours of sending the email was 45.2%, and click-through rate to the link I sent was 21.74%.
I hate decimal points os Let’s just say 45% open rate and 21% click-through rate.
So when I sent the email, all the 65,000 people received it. Not everyone was interested because not everyone who subscribes to your email list is a fan, of course. So only 45% open it, and that’s 29,250 people reading my email.
Now I have 21% click-through rate, which translates into a whopping 13,650 clicks to my link!
Do you see the difference?
let me illustrate that for you in an infographic so you can picture this!
So in simple words, you would have made almost $14,000 with just one email while on facebook, you would’ve gotten nothing!
I do this day in and day out so I know these values are correct for a lot of people, I included!
Using a 1% conversion rate from email is also very terrible! If you really take care of your email list and really build a connection with them, you should get no less than $54,594 from that same email, which should be somewhere between 4% – 5% conversion rate.
Of course, there are ways to sell, and sometimes, you might have the wrong audience, but once you have the right people in, you should really not have a problem at all!
Things you should know before building your email list
My goal is to help you become the best blogger you could be, so I feel obligated to tell you this.
Not everyone will be your best customer or reader. You will have a lot of people who will hate you for NO Reason! The bigger you grow, the more haters you will get and the more harsh words you’ll start seeing in your inbox and that’s very fine.
Focus on giving value and building your business and interact with them if you can. I always request from my tribe members to email me back and talk to me. This will get challenging because the more you grow, the harder it’ll be to reply to everyone but you can do it to build a stable relationship.
Don’t focus on making money from them because you’ll never know who will buy and who won’t. So be the best you can be, ignore the haters and if anyone has a problem with you, they can unsubscribe.
Also, unsubscribers are doing you a favor trust me! It’s hurtful to see people unsubscribing when you are starting new, and that can discourage you or make you feel like you are not good enough. Don’t fall for it because here is the favor they are doing you by leaving:
You have more space to talk to those who really matter to you as a blogger and as a business owner. And either way, those people who unsubscribed would have never bought from you at all.
Also, don’t spam, or email too much! Just think of your own inbox. How often would you want to see you in your own inbox? I love myself that’s why I can handle a maximum of 2 times a week and maybe more if something came up. Otherwise don’t over send emails and don’t spam with whatever offer you put your hands on!
Now let’s get to what this post is all about! Building your email list!
What you should have before trying to build your email list
Before you use any of the methods below, you need to have two things:
Requirement #1: A lead magnet
A lead magnet is a something you give to your subscribers in return for their email address. If you’ve ever been to any blog, I am sure you’ve entered your email into a form to download a checklist, watch a video, or get an infographic.
In the old ages (like 2010) you might have gotten away with “Join my newsletter”. But now, you need to give people something in return for their first name and email address.
What Lead magnet to use
The best lead magnet you can use is something that’s directly related to your main product or offer. So if you are selling a course on makeup, ask yourself this question:
“What part of this course can I give for free?”
and use that as a lead magnet! This attracts leads that are interested in what you have to sell and filters out everyone else, therefore saving you a lot of money.
Here are some lead magnet ideas you could use:
- Email Course
and the list goes on and on.
Requirement #1: A Landing Page
Landing pages or a squeeze page are pages designed specifically to collect leads. They have a very specific offer (your lead magnet) that forces people to make a decision, either enter your information to get this or leave.
As a result, you will see a lot more conversions than if you simply put a form on a blog post.
Here is an example of a landing page I used for Blogging Tribe:
This specific page converted at 41% with cold traffic (people who’ve never heard of you before), which is really good!
There are many ways to improve your landing page, but the basic things remain the same. Here is what your landing pages need to have:
- A catchy headline that grabs attention.
- A picture of what you are offering to make it more real in the visitor’s eyes.
- A short description of what they are getting and how it will help THEM.
- A Big button to allow them to join your email list and download the lead magnet you are giving out.
My top 8 ways to build your email list!
Here are my top 8 ways to build an email list fast! These methods are the ones I used and still use until today to grow my email lists day in and day out!
Keep in mind that you should not rely on a single source of leads! I recommend you give all the bellow a try to build your email list. Using all of them at once will surely guarantee that you will build your email list fast and not have to worry in case one of them is no longer bringing in new leads for the right cost for you and your business.
Method #1: Build your email list with Facebook Ads
Facebook pages might be dead, but Facebook link click ads are surely not dead! AT ALL!
This is my favorite method of getting leads for my businesses and websites.
Simply run a Facebook “link click campaign”, or a “conversion campaign” to your landing page!
Here is what I do step by step. I won’t get into detail to not make this post longer than it should be.
- Create multiple ad sets (2 Ad Sets)
- On each ad set, create multiple variations of your ad.
- Run all the ads with a small budget for at least 24 hours, spend on each ad between $5-20/day.
- Come back, look at which one is performing best.
- Once you found the best performing ad or adset, put all your budget on that one.
- Disable all the other ads that are not performing well.
- Wait for the results!
There you go!
Another way to get emails through Facebook is to run a Lead generation ad but I haven’t tried it much.
Method #2: Twitter Ads
This is less popular than the Facebooks ads method, however, it’s still important to try out.
The steps are the same as the Facebook style.
With Twitter, however, you will be able to also get profile followers, and a lot more engagement and you will only pay for the clicks you get!
See how cool I am?
Method #3: Google Adwords
Google Adwords will surely get you the best conversions and the best CTR you could look for.
Do you know why?
Because it will show your ads to those people who are already searching for what you have to offer.
Think about it this way:
Imagine you are on Facebook, Twitter, or IG. You are scrolling through your news feed and you find an offer to learn about blogging.
Now imagine you are searching on Google for blogging tips, and you come across an ad that says “Get the Ultimate Guide to Blogging for Free”.
Which one would you be more likely to go for? I can bet you will be more likely to click on the second situation.
However, that’s the reason why you would want to try different channels.
Google Adwords tends to be slightly more expensive than Facebook in some cases, but that is always subjective to your ad and who you are targeting.
Method #4: YouTube!
Building email lists through YouTube is something I am not very experienced with. However, if you are a YouTuber, you could surely use your channel to grow your email list!
Simply make a great video, talk about a subject, and then tell your viewers that you have a free guide that has more in step details.
It will surely help!
Another way is to find YouTube influencers to boost your offers on your behalf, but this will, of course, cost you money too.
Method #5.Your blog(s)
If you own multiple blogs or even a single blog, then you can truly grow your email list by crazy numbers, especially if you have traffic!
Using simple things like pop-ups, or opt-in forms inside your posts will surely make it easier to get good results. If you have a 1% conversion rate, and you get 100 hits a day, then you are getting 1 new subscriber a day!
The math never lies!

Here are some examples of how you can use your blog’s sidebar to grow your email list:
And here is another example of how to use your blog posts to grow your email list as well using content upgrades:
Some of the ways you can use your blog to generate new leads are:
- Your Blog’s sidebar
- Content upgrades
- On the homepage
- About Page
- Checkout Page
- At the end of every blog post
The point is, your blog is an amazing marketing channel and can help you to grow your email list very dramatically if done right.
Method #6: SEO
This is closely related to building your email list through your blogs. However, with SEO is mainly driving more traffic to your blog.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the best way to get traffic from Google, Bing, and Yahoo! Honestly speaking, with SEO you can look to get readers and viewers from all over the world without having to pay to get to them!
With SEO the math is simple:
if you get 1000 views a day, and you have a 10% opt-in rate, then you can look forward to 100 new subscribers a day. In other words getting 3000 subscribers a month!
This could easily cost you hundreds of dollars through advertising. With SEO you get it for FREE!
Isn’t that good? If not, then my friend, good luck with your journey! Let me know how it goes!
The basics of SEO are like this:
- Ensure your website is looking good with onsite SEO.
- Write content consistently. Even once a month would be fine, but be consistent about it.
- The content you write needs to be optimized for a specific keyword that people are actively searching for.
- Consider how that keyword affects your sales. This is also known as search intent. Different keywords have different purchase intents, for example, take: “best WordPress hosting company” vs. “WP Engine review”. If you have an affiliate link for WP Engine, then the second is probably best to target.
- Build backlinks to your blog and your blog posts to give more authority to your blog.
I am not an SEO expert yet, but a great place to learn SEO is my favorite SEO blog Backlinko! So check it out to learn how to properly optimize your website for search engines.
Method #7: Viral Content
If you know me, then you know I LOVE viral content!
I have blogs that specifically do this and nothing else!
Imagine you make a post and it goes viral, driving to you around 4000 visitors to your blog. Now with a 10% opt-in rate, that would have been 400 new subscribers! Let’s assume I only got 40! Isn’t that also good?
Viral content doesn’t require payment!
All you need to do is create compelling, entertaining, and amazing content! and there you go!
I’ve written a post on 14 ways to drive traffic to your blog where I also mention viral marketing and SEO both together.
Some of the content that goes “viral” includes:
- List posts (eg. 14 ways to drive traffic to your blog)
- and posts that give a lot of practical tips like the ones you see on DIY blogs.
Method #8: Contests & Giveaways
Giveaways are one of the best ways to build your email list!
If you own an e-commerce store, you can give away a product. If you wrote a book, you can give away the book for FREE.
The whole idea behind this is to give people an incentive too good that they opt-in to your email list for a chance to get it!
For example, if I was launching my own product, I would simply be like “Hi guys, I am giving away this cool product to 5 people! Enter your email and share this post to enter the contest!”.
You can be a little bit more creative than that of course. I wrote that in 5 seconds so please don’t go take it and then blame me if it didn’t work!
The more people join the contest, they will share your page to earn more points and hopefully win the contest. When they share, more people will see your contest and they join and share and so on.
You get the point! Don’t you?
How would I use the above ways to build my email list fast?
I would start by creating 2 different ad copies. Then I’d design ads for both marketing messages, and make sure they look great!
Then I would upload my ads to both Facebook and Twitter.
Set a small budget for all of them and run them.
As they are running, I would go to AdWords, and design multiple ads (to split test them as well).
Then I would wait and see what is working best, and scale up on that one to build the email list fast!
It’s really as simple as that.
What matters most is what you are giving out, your lead magnet and the audience you are targeting.
Once you understand email marketing properly and really prepare to use it, you will have an insane power to make money literally on demand! Your email list is your money printing machine, but a legal one.
So focus on growing your list, and nurture those leads, give them a lot of value and even if they don’t buy from you, that’s fine. You would have really impacted their lives and helped them out and at the same time had readers for your blog!
